Barça Regal’s Liga ACB season started with a shock reverse at the Palau Blaugrana. Xavi Pascual paid the price against Blancos de Rueda of Valladolid of a poor second half in which they allowed a 17 point lead to slip away from them. Barça had led 42-25 at half time.

Mickeal and Tomic, the best

It all started so well for Barça Regal, who stormed into a comfortable early lead, with Pete Mickeal getting 11 points in the first period. Both teams played attractive, positive ball, but with the score at 23-14 after the first period, there was no doubt who was in control.

In the second period, Ante Tomic came into his own, and enjoyed extra minutes on court after Nathan Jawai was punished with two early fouls. Abrines, Rabaseda and Wallace also came on to add some freshness, while the considerable lead remained intact and despite conceding a 0-5 streak, FCB were soon 42-30 up.

Valladolid bite back

But the third period saw a dramatic change in the script. Barça seemed to relax, and Valladolid were ready to pounce. A 0-16 stunned the Palau, and all of a sudden, from leading 49-36, Barça Regal were now behind with Sinanovic and Renfroe causing all kinds of unexpected problems for the home side.

The Catalans failed to get things straight in the final period, and Valladolid managed to edge no fewer than seven ahead. Barça Regal’s nervous and imprecise attacking couldn’t turn things around, and they ended up losing a game when they had looked to be heading for a comfortable victory.
