Real Madrid needs to win today’s King’s Cup final if the team wants to break it’s almost 20-year  run without winning the competition. It won’t be easy for Los Blancos, however. Madrid and Barça have played against each other 17 times in ACB competitions. Barça’s dominance has been clear, the Catalans have won 11 times out of 17. Furthermore, if we only focus on the King’s Cup, Madrid has only defeated Barça men on one occasion (1988/89), of the six finals both sides have played against each other.

Despite past results, Real Madrid come into the final on form In the semifinals the team led by Pablo Laso edged Banca Cívica out of the competition in a hard-fought and record-setting match (92-84): Madrid managed to break the record of triples made in any King’s Cup game, they scored 14 out of 25, they also scored the most points ever in a third quarter (30 points).

Even season

Barça and Madrid are level on wins in games against each other this season. FCB Regal won on one occasion, in the semifinals of the Super Cup, and Madrid won on the league’s matchday 14. Curiously enough, the two games were won by four points, chances are today’s game will be a close one.

Xavi Pascual believes that the match will be exciting: “it’ll be a great final.” The Madrid manager, Pablo Laso, highlighted his team’s rival’s quality and said that the match will be difficult: “Xavi Pascual has managed to create a great team, he has a great group of players.”

King of Cups crown in play

The match this Sunday also has another incentive besides the title itself. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona Regal are playing to be the team with the most Cup wins ever. The team that crowns itself today will be the side with the most King’s Cup titles. Now, Los Blancos and Azulgranas are level with 22 titles apiece.
