Historically Barça Regal have been able pick themselves up and successfully mount an ACB title bid in the wake of a Final Four elimination in the Euroleague. Of the nine times the Azulgrana team have been eliminated from the final phase of the European competitions they’ve gone on to win the Liga five times. The first, in 1998, came after losing to Jugoplastika Split in Munich, the last, in 2009, was when Barça Regal finished third in Berlin. Furthermore, Barça Regal made it to the final of the ACB playoffs three times and were only eliminated once in the semifinals.

ACB title after Berlin elimination in 2009

With Xavi Pascual at the helm, Barça Regal finished third in the Final Four in Berlin. The circumstances called for a morale-depleted team ahead of the ACB playoffs. However, the current Barça Regal manager spurred his team forward and Barça Regal clinched the 2008/09 ACB title. Barça Regal beat Pamesa Valencia in the quarter-finals by 2-0, Unicaja in the semi-finals by 2-1 and TAU Cerámica in the final by 3-1.

This year is similar to the 2009 season. Barça Regal finished third in Istanbul’s Final Four and the team have little time to lament their failed Euroleague title bid seeing that the Liga Endesa playoffs start this Thursday. Barça Regal will face Lucentum Alicante at the Palau in the first match of the quarter-finals series.
