team celebrate winning the cup

Cup champions

Barça Regal showed the world their championship winning mentality throughout the 2012/13 season, despite missing key players throughout the year. They went on to win two titles: the Catalan League and the Copa del Rey. In Europe, the team made it as far as the Final Four of the Euroleague, and in the domestic competition they missed out on the title after the fifth and final match of the final series of the Liga Endesa.

Gaining in confidence

The team improved week after week. After two disappointing matches in the Liga Endesa, Barça Regal kicked it into high gear. Even though the team suffered a couple of setbacks along the way, it was unquestionable that no other team could match Barça’s intensity and eagerness to win. The heart of a champion should never be underestimated, and those that did paid dearly. The final of the Copa del Rey in Vitoria, where Barça Regal defeated Real Madrid in the quarterfinals after double overtime, Laboral Kutxa in the semifinals and Valencia Basket in the final, is a clear example of Barça’s tenacity.

In a season with a lot of new faces - Jasikevicius, Jawai, Tomic, Abrines, Todorovic, Oleson and Mavrokefalidis - luck wasn’t on Barça Regal’s side when it came to injuries. Besides the typical problems that arise in a season, there were some exceptional situations that saw Pete Mickeal and Nathan Jawai sidelined during the crucial stretch of the year. In addition to Mickeal and Jawai, Todorovic’s fractured finger, Lorbek and Navarro’s physical problems and Jasikevicius’ fractured rib in the playoffs were too many setbacks for a team that made their fans proud.
