Barça Regal successfully defended the Liga title won in the 2010/11 season this year. In one of the most exciting finals in recent memory, the team led by Xavi Pascual beat Real Madrid by 3-2 in the final series. This was the team’s third Liga title in four seasons, and possibly the most deserved. The Azulgranas had to overcome many adversities in a season that started off with many new faces in the team. For example, Navarro had to play through his painful plantar fascia injury and Ndong wasn’t able to finish the season due to injury.

A heroic victory

After finishing first in the regular season with more than impressive numbers (29 victories and 5 defeats), Barça Regal easily saw off Lucentum Alicante in the first playoff round. In the semis, against Valencia, the team fought back from the defeat at the Palau and took the following two matches played at La Fonteta. The final against Madrid was epic. A miraculous three-pointer from Marcelinho in the final second of the first match gave Barça the first victory of the series (81-80), but Los Blancos won the second (69-75) and third (85-59) matches. Full of pride, the Azulgranas saved the first match ball of the series in Madrid (75-81) and they clinched the title at the Palau in magical form (73-69).

The Liga title was the 12th out of 16 possible titles in the last four seasons. The FC Barcelona basketball team’s triumphant era continues.

Two missteps along the way

Despite winning the 2011/12 Liga title, the Azulgranas had to overcome two important missteps. The first was in the Copa del Rey at the Palau Sant Jordi, where Madrid decisively beat Barça in the title match. The second was in the Euroleague. Despite having a nearly impeccable run in the competition, Barça Regal lost in the semifinals of the Final Four in Istanbul to Olympiakos, days ahead of the final series of the Liga Endesa.

Pascual’s men showed amazing mental strength as they came back to the domestic competition. It was this quality that allowed the Azulgranas to finish off the season in triumphant fashion after claiming the Super Cup and the Liga Catalana at the start of the year.
