Las Palmas on 19th of February hosted the XII Baku Meeting of Supporters Clubs of the Canary Islands, the main event of which was a dinner chaired by vice-president of FC Barcelona, Jordi Cardoner.

This meeting coincided with the visit of FC Barcelona to the Estadio Gran Canaria to take on Las Palmas in a league match 14 years since the last encounter between the two sides in the city. The weather did not prevent a real festival of all things Barcelona, as Barça fans had been waiting many years to be able to see the club in Las Palmas.

The organization of the meeting was headed by the supporters club Peña Barcelonista Nicolás Casaus from the capital of Gran Canaria, chaired by José Yamal Hawach, who is also the President of the Federation of Supporters Clubs of Gran Canaria.

This commemorative meeting was attended by around 140 people at the Tao Garden Club, composed of some 14 local supporters clubs and three from outside the Canary Islands, some of which are still in the foundation stage.

The vice-president, responsible for the Social Area and Foundation of FC Barcelona, Jordi Cardoner, was accompanied at the dinner by representatives of the Club including member of the social committee Jaume Carreter, and ex-Barça player Ricardo Serna who is a member of the Association of Barça Players. Joan Casals, the grandfather of Barça, also made his way to the Canary Islands to attend the meeting and the match against Las Palmas.

The president of the organizing supporters club, José Yamal Hawach, presented a commemorative gift to Jordi Cardoner and also to Ricardo Serna, while the vice-president of the club presented a jersey as well as a souvenir to remember the meeting.

Jordi Cardoner paid tribute to his grandfather, Nicolau Casaus, which bears the name of the supporters club organizing the meeting, and said with emotion: “He encouraged the start of the movement of supporters clubs in the Canary Islands, and it gives me great pride to see that the passion of Barça is well and truly alive in these islands and to be present in this meeting which has been organized in the name of my grandfather”.

The Canary Islands supporters clubs present at the meeting were: PB Nicolás Casaus, PB Pedrito, PB Culegas, PB Valle Gran Rey de La Gomera, PB Isla Bonita de La Palma, PB Eurobarça de Fuerteventura, PB Joan Laporta de El Hierro, PB Barçaldea de Gran Canaria, PB La Libertad, PB Arucas and PB de Firgas. Also present were the supporters clubs of Móstoles (Madrid), Sierra de Elche (Albacete) and Penya Blaugrana El Born de Barcelona.

Visit to Ron Arehucas

The day’s proceedings started in the morning, with a visit to the emblematic factory of Ron Arehucas, a landmark in the Canary Islands which is owned by the Counselor of UD Las Palmas, Rafael Méndez.

After seeing the facilities of the factory, which is situated in the municipality of Arucas, the vice-president Jordi Cardoner left his signature on one of the barrels at the winery to pay gratitude for the hospitality. On these barrels can be found plenty of signatures of well-known figures who have visited the Ron Arehucas factory.
