Fran Sánchez’s side qualified for the Copa de la Reina final in a game against Athletic Club that had to be decided on penalties (2-2; 3-4). Goals from Mariona and Martens ensured a shootout, with Sandra Paños the heroine for the Blaugrana. Barça's rivals will be Atlético Madrid, who beat Granadilla 0-2. The final will be played in Mérida next Saturday, June 2 (8.30pm CEST).

The semifinal began with both teams playing very conservative football, and it wasn’t until the 18th minute before the first chance arrived, Vicky Losada hitting a spectacular shot against the crossbar. Alexia also went close before Mariona broke the deadlock with a back-post header from Bussaglia’s corner (min 36).

In the second half Barça dominated the game throughout and had several clear opportunities to increase the score. Alexia was again involved and she too found the woodwork. Athletic came more into the match late on, and through a direct free-kick, Eunate stepped up to hammer home an 82nd minute equaliser to send the match into extra-time.

Ups and downs

Extra-time began with a wonderful goal by Lieke Martens, who curled her shot into the top corner (1-2). Barça's joy, however, lasted only three minutes before Lucía equalised again (2-2). Despite a few more chances for either side, the game went to penalties. In the shootout, Sandra Paños saved Eunate’s kick, and combined with Lucía hitting the post, it meant Barça were victorious.
