Alexia Putellas taking on her opponent / VICTOR SALGADO - FCB

FC Barcelona Women were knocked out of the Women’s Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain with a late header in the French capital on Wednesday night.

Xavi Llorens’ side earned a respectable 0-0 draw in the first leg in Barcelona last week and were hoping to grab a crucial away goal on their visit to Paris to seal a historic place in the last four.

The home team demonstrated why they were the favourites going into the tie, dominating possession and the chances on goal. However, any attempts at the visitors’ goal were thwarted by Sandra Paños. The Barça stopper made a total of four saves in the opening half to keep PSG at bay.

The second half saw more balance between the two sides, and it was Barça who had the clearest chance of the match. Bárbara Latorre, on as a substitute, sprung the offside trap but was unable to guide the ball past the PSG keeper to give Barça a crucial breakthrough.

The decisive goal eventually came on 85 minutes for the home side, as a cross into the box found Cristiane unmarked who then headed towards goal. Paños was unable to hold the ball and the ball squirmed under the keeper’s gloves to end Barça’s semi-final dream.
