Barça enjoyed a goal-fest in the derby / MIGUEL RUIZ - FCB

FC Barcelona Women recorded an incredible 7-1 win over rivals RCD Espanyol on Sunday to maintain their hopes of claiming the league title.

Xavi Llorens’ side needed to win to remain hot on the heels of leaders Athletic Club, yet there were no signs of nerves at any point during the encounter.

Barça dominated possession at the start of the match and, though it took over half an hour to bag the first, the floodgates opened after Olga Garcia’s opener. Olga grabbed a second minutes later while Alexia from the spot made it 3-0 before the break.

The home side were unable to muster a clear chance in the opening exchanges of the second period. But it did not take long before Jenni Hermoso got in on the act. The lethal forward two in the space of six minutes either side of the hour mark to give Barça an unassailable lead.

Two minutes after coming off the bench, Sandra Hernández made it 6-0. Espanyol did manage to get a consolation goal through Elba minutes later, but Alexia made sure Barça had the final say with a seventh on 73 minutes.
