Alexia opened the scoring in Sunday's 3-0 win / VÍCTOR SALGADO - FCB

The Barça women’s team have started the second half of the league season with a 3-0 defeat of this season’s surprise package Granadilla Tenerife.

In a fine match, they attacked right from the start, and after Olga and Ruth had already come close, Alexia got them off the mark after 11 minutes. The same player very nearly added a second just moments later only to de denied by visiting keeper Pili, as was Olga Garcia in the 26th minutes.

The Barça ladies continued to dominate, but Pili was beaten again after 26 minutes, this time by Ane Bergara and it would have become three had the excellent Tenerife keeper not saved a penalty by Jenni.

But there was still more to come before the half-time whistle blew, with Barça making it three courtesy of an own goal.

In the second half, Barça worked hard to extend their lead, but time and again came up against the outstanding Pili, whose save against Melanie was among the best of some truly remarkable interventions.

Irene had a wonderful chance to make it four when she finished off a fine move from Bárbara, but her shot struck the Tenerife crossbar.

Even with the win more than secure, the Catalans kept battling, but there would be no further score. The win leaves Xavi Llorens’ side on 40 points, a fortnight before they host league leaders Athletic Bilbao, currently four points ahead of them, at the Ciutat Esportiva. Before that, however, there’s a tricky trip to Levante to think about.
