Olga García celebrating her winning goal / VÍCTOR SALGADO-FCB

Job done and into the quarter-finals. Barça Women are now amongst the best eight teams in Europe as they take their place in the last eight of the Champions League for the second time in their history. Xavi Llorens’ team confirmed their superiority over their Dutch opponents with a victory in the second leg thanks to a goal from Olga Garcia in the first half.

The blaugranes were 1-0 up form the first leg in Holland but that did not stop them going out to try and win the game at the Miniestadi. Olga Garcia went close on two occasions as did Marta Unzué and Ane Bergara also tested the Twente keeper.

Barça’s efforts to take the game to their opposition earned their reward after 24 minutes. The goalscorer from the first leg Olga Garcia found the net again after a good cross from the right hand side from Alexia. The more than 3,000 strong crowd at the Miniestadi, a record, erupted in delight.

Xavi Llorens’ team continued to dominate the game and Marta Torrejón and Jennifer Hermoso both had chances to double the blaugranes’ advantage. In the second half Twente improved at the back and came back into the encounter. Nevertheless, Dutch keeper Ubachs was forced into a good save from Jennifer’s header after just eight minutes of the second period. The visitors went close themselves when Roord slotted a shot just wide of Paños’ goal. In the final few minutes a shot from distance from Melanie crashed against the woodwork.

Despite knowing the tie was as good as lost,Twente pushed forward and Van der Gragt rattled the crossbar in injury time. Nevertheless, Barça held on for the win to take the tie 2-0 on aggregate and cement their place in the quarter-finals.
