Gallardo controls the ball from a corner/ La Liga

The players shake hands before kick-off / La Liga

The FC Barcelona women’s team have earned a 0-0 draw at Atlético Madrid to stay second in the championship with 34 points, three behind Athletic Club, who play Oviedo later today, and two more than Atlético.

Barça were prevented from playing their usual game against a well-organised opponent, while the action was far from free-flowing, with constant interruptions caused by both teams.

Barça hit first through Marta Torrejón from a corner, but her effort went just wide, and after that Atlético went onto to dominate for long spells of the first half, but without creating much in the way of serious threats, Rocío coming closest when a free-kick was delivered nicely from the wing.

Barça, meanwhile, made good use of Torrejón’s height, but her ability in the air failed to end up with the ball in the back of the net. Olga García also very nearly got on the scoresheet with a long range strike after catching Atlético keeper Gallardo off her line, but the ball floated just wide of the post.

The second half followed a similar script, but there were even fewer real chances than in the first. Atlético were gradually pushed further and further back, but gallantly held on, with Gallardo only having to intervene on isolated occasions.

Barça’s best chance came from a melee in the area following a free-kick, which ended with Ane Bergara’s fine turn-and-shoot drifting wide. It all ended as it had begun, with a point each for two of the prime contenders for the league title.
