Sonia doing everything to find an equaliser / FCB-VICTOR SALGADO

This time it was not to be. Xavi Llorens’ side gave everything, especially in the second half, but they have exited the Spanish Cup at the semi-final stage after a 1-0 defeat against Valencia CF. Both side had chances in the first half but it was Valencia’s Carol who put Barça’s opponents ahead. In the second half the blaugranes were the better side but a missed penalty from Sonia turned out to be a turning point with the blaugranes unable to claim a third successive double of Cup and League.

First half with chances for both sides

The Barça Women’s A side came out in the first half really focused. The opening chance of the game fell to Sonia after an excellent cross from Marta Corredera. In the tenth minute Barça had the ball in the back of the net with Marta Torrejón turning in a free kick from Sonia yet it did not count as the referee had spotted an infringement for offside. Sonia had another chance for the blaugranes before former Barça player Carol gave Valencia the lead before the break with a well stuck goal from outside the area.

Dominance without reward

In the second half Xavi Llorens’ side chased the equaliser. Marta Corredera and Sonia led from the front but the final ball lacked the quality of the build up play. Coach Llorens made a few changes and that seemed to have a positive effect. Ivana was brought down in the Valencia box and Barça had the opportunity to level things up from the spot. However, rival keeper Mariajo made fine save diving to her right. Barça had chances but were unable to take them and it was Valencia who progressed to Sunday’s final against Sporting de Huelva. Xavi Llorens’ side end the season as league champions but with the disappointment of not being able to retain the Cup.
