[[DES_1]]The Barça Women’s A side are in the midst of a vital week with regards to their aspirations in this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions’ League. Last Saturday they went down to a 1-0 defeat at home in the Mini Stadium against Bristol Academy in the first leg of their last 16 tie. On Thursday they travel to England in an attempt to turn the tie around and book their place in the quarter finals of the Champions’ League.

Sonia Bermúdez and Vicky Losada will be on hand to do their best to help the team coached by Xavi Llorens through to the last 8 of Europe’s most important club competition. The two players have returned to Barça after an unforgettable experience playing in the best women’s league in the world for American club Western New York Flash.

Women’s Football in the USA

Last season both women came to an agreement with FC Barcelona that allowed them to taste life in the North American League. Sonia left in February and Vicky a few months later in April to join Western New York Flash. The two vital members of the Women’s team explained their adventure in the USA where they relished playing in front of crowds that numbered as many as 25,000. “The US is the biggest country in the world in terms of Women’s Football, they have been working at it for many years. Here, we are getting better, but over there they have the best players in the world and there is more media coverage,” points out Vicky. Her travelling partner Sonia Bermúdez was equally impressed - most of all with the atmosphere at women’s matches: “When we arrived at the stadiums you could see lots and lots of people buying tickets at the ground. Once inside, the atmosphere was incredible, it was a real American show.”

The two blaugranes are in agreement that their time in North America helped them to develop as players, above all making them more competitive. That competitiveness will be vital on Thursday if Barça are to turn things around against Bristol Academy and make it through to the next round of the UEFA Champions’ League.

Excellent league form

Barça women’s team have lost just once in the league this season and are just 4 points behind leaders Athletic Bilbao with a game in hand. They have won their last five games in the league, the most recent a 3-0 win against a dangerous Levante side, scoring 22 goals and conceding none.
