Barça celebrate Vicky Losada's goal / XAVIER ALEGRIA-FCB

Pressuring. Being very clear about how they needed to play against their rivals. The Barça Women’s team went out onto the field ready for everything, to win and to play well. To turn around the tie after the disappointing defeat in the first leg in the Mini Stadium in Barcelona. Unfortunately, despite the immense put in by Xavi Llorens’ team, it was not to be and they are now out of the this season’s edition of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

With just 9 minutes of normal time remaining a penalty in favour of Bristol Academy put an end to the blaugranes hopes of making it to the quarter finals of Europe’s top club competition. The spot kick was converted by Watts and the home side once again had the advantage in the tie.

Barça the better side in the first half

The visitors started off the better side, forcing a series of corners in the opening half hour. Barça had the first real chance of the game just after the 30 minute mark with Bristol then going close after a rapid counter attack. The blaugranes took the lead 6 minutes before half time. A free kick given away by Bristol defender Matthews led to Vicky Losada finding the net after her initial free kick had bounced back to the Barça midfielder off the defensive wall. The women’s team were level on aggregate at half time and confident that they could turn the tie around in the second half.

Bristol fightback and missed chances

The English side clawed their way back into the game in the second half. They threatened primarily from set pieces with Barça keeper Laura Ràfols making an excellent save to keep the visitors’ lead in tact after 64 minutes. However, Bristol did level things up when the referee adjudged Melanie to have brought down Harding in the box and Bristol midfielder Watts stepped up to slot home the resultant penalty. Xavi Llorens’ side gave everything in the time remaining with Losada and Unzué going close but in the end the 1-1 draw was not enough as the 1-0 defeat at home in Barcelona consigned them to elimination from this season’s Champions’ League 2-1 on aggregate to Bristol Academy.
