Barça’s Youth A team were officially proclaimed league champions with five games still to play after beating Cornella 3-0 at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper in a hard fought game which wasn’t decided until the closing minutes. It’s the academy sections’ first title of the season and came after goals from Robert Costa, Adama and a penalty by Cristian Herrera.

Tight from the start

It was a tight match from the start, as a well organised Cornella limited Barça’s free flowing style and ensured that they couldn’t find spaces to threaten the visitors’ keeper. Long range efforts from Cristian and Adama were the hosts only attempts on goal until on the half hour a Roger Riera effort brought a good save from Sergio in the Cornella goal. Barça’s best chances though looked likely to come from dead ball situations.

Cornella sat back and soaked up the pressure, whilst hitting Barça with fast counter attacks. Keeper Ondoa was called on to make a couple of saves from the visitors’ breaks, which he did comfortably.

Goals come after the break

Barça looked sharper after the break and just before the hour mark Robert Costa broke the deadlock, poking home from a corner after the keeper palmed the ball away. The goal settled the champions in waiting and they began to enjoy more possession, with Adama – who was impressing down the right wing – grabbing the second 10 minutes from time.

3-0 and the title

When Adama was brought down in the box in the final moments, Cristian Herrera fired home the penalty for the third which confirmed the title and the players were soon celebrating out on the pitch as the final whistle went. After losing their first match ball in the derby against Espanyol last week, Vinyals’ youngsters made no mistake this time around and with five games still to play they are officially league champions.
