Next season, not only will 32 of the continent’s greatest football teams be battling it out in the Champions League, but their youth teams will be doing so as well. FC Barcelona will be playing in the brand new UEFA Youth League, to be played by the U19 teams of each of the clubs that qualify for the full Champions league.

The youth team groups will be the same as those in the professional Champions League. Barça will play its home games in the Miniestadi during the same weeks that the first team will also be playing its fixtures. That means that both home and visiting fans will be able to enjoy two top quality matches, one at the Camp Nou and another in the Mini.

One-leg knockout matches

The group stages will follow the exact same format as the UEFA Champions League, but the knockout stage will be different. The top two teams from each four-team group will go into the second round, and from then on, matches will be played on a knockout basis, with games played over one leg only, and drawn matches being decided on penalties.

The winners of each first round group will get home advantage in the second round and the semi-finals and final will be played at a neutral venue.

International experience

The idea of the competition is for Under 19 players to gain the experience of playing international matches and to be better prepared for when they make the leap to the top level.
