The Argentine is in his first season in the role and feels ‘we have an exciting squad this season’ as he fixes his sights on the Champìons League

The FC Barcelona first team for the 2018/19 season were presented to the fans at Camp Nou ahead of the Gamper Trophy game against Boca Juniors. The players came out on to the field one by one to a great ovation from the crowd inside the stadium.

The fans reserved a special welcome for Leo Messi in his debut at Camp Nou as first captain of the side. The Argentine confessed: “It’s a source of great pride to be captain. I know what it means to wear the armband and but I am lucky to have had great role models such as Puyol, Xavi and the great Andrés whom we will miss this season.”

The new captained continued; “We have a great squad to get excited about and those who have come in will help us to get better.” Messi also appeared to be still hungry for success: “Last season was really good as we did the double but we all felt bad about how it went in the Champions League.

“We promise that this season we will all we can to bring that trophy back to Camp Nou,” concluded the Argentine before rounding off with a vociferous ‘Visca el Barça i Visca Catalunya!’

Coach Ernesto Valverde also spoke during the presentation, guaranteeing the fans the dedication and effort of his players before adding, ‘together we are stronger’. The boss finished off by saying: “We have won the first trophy of the season with the Spanish Super Cup and with your help we hope it will not be the last.”
