Ter Stegen, a great match at San Mamés

The German goalkeeper was decisive against Athletic Club and saved the team on countless occasions

Messi and Paulinho were the scorers in FC Barcelona’s victory at San Mamés (0-2). The Argentine made it 0-1, just before the break, while the Brazilian’s goal in added time ensured all three points against Athletic Club. However, everyone agreed that the win was made possible thanks to Marc-André Ter Stegen, the German goalkeeper’s saves being the key to victory.

Striker Aritz Aduriz couldn’t get past Ter Stegen with any of the four clear chances he had. The most decisive interventions came in the 18th minute, with the scores at 0-0, and in the 85th minute, which prevented a late equaliser.

A record

The German has now set an historical record having kept seven clean sheets in the 10 La Liga matches that Barça have played in 2017/18.

Only three goals have been scored against him, (one each vs Getafe, Eibar and Atlético Madrid), which is the best current record in the top five European leagues. Never before have Barça conceded so little after the 10th game of domestic competition, the previous best figure being four goals in the 1968/69 season, 1977/78, 2011/12 and 2014/15.
