Ernesto Valverde was naturally delighted in the pressroom following the 3-0 defeat of Chelsea to march onward into the quarter finals of the Champions League.

“The game started according to the same script as the first leg” he commented. “But the early goal changed the panorama. After the goal, they needed to step it up a bit and they could have scored on a couple of occasions. They were dangerous coming forward.”

The Barça boss insisted that it was a lot harder for his player than the scoreline might suggest. “The players needed to adjust, and we improved and then we scored the third goal.”

He also had praise for Ousmane Dembélé, who scored his first goal for the club this evening. “He worked hard in attack” he said. “And he also dropped back to play a fundamental defensive role. He’s taken a big step forward.”
