A look back at the great starts that the Catalans have made to the knockout stages of recent European campaigns - each time against Premiership opposition

The Champions League is back and on Tuesday at 8.45pm CET, FC Barcelona will be at Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 – the 13th year in a row that the team have made it into this round.

Not since 2003/4, when they played in the UEFA Cup, have Barça failed to make it into the first knockout stage, and there are some fine memories among all those different encounters.

How about the 2013/14 season, when Leo Messi opened the scoring against Manchester City from the penalty spot and Dani Alves sentenced things in the final minute by beating Joe Hart?

Or the treble winning season of 2014/15, when Barça met the Citizens again, and once again claimed victory with a brilliant brace from Luis Suárez.

It was English opposition again last year, Arsenal, and once again it was a Catalan victory. Leo Messi totally conquered the Emirates Stadium with two wonderful finishes to set FCB up nicely for a place in the quarter finals.
