After Friday morning’s training session at St. George’s Park, Sergi Roberto and Jeremy Mathieu spoke to the media briefly in the mixed zone.

Having played several matches at right-back last season, the influx of new midfielders and the departure of Dani Alves is seen by Sergi Roberto as a chance to play more football.

“In midfield, there are many players, and with the exit of Alves, the chance to play at full-back is a good one,” he told reporters.

Sergi Roberto says there is “healthy competition” with the other right-back in the squad, Aleix Vidal, and says that playing in that position for Barça “is like playing in an advanced role because we spend most of the match attacking”.

Talking of the club’s four summer signings, Roberto said: “They are good incorporations, they are young and can be at Barça for many years.”

Regarding the arrivals of compatriots Digne and Umtiti, who play in the same position as him, Mathieu said that he has to “keep fighting for my spot. They are teammates but we are competing for one position”.

He added: “We want to win everything, as always, and I personally want to play as much as possible”.
