On 16 May 2010, FC Barcelona hosted Valladolid at the Camp Nou knowing that they needed a victory to claim one of the hardest-fought leagues in recent years. Real Madrid and Barça did battle from the start of the campaign right up until the final day. The blaugranas ended the season with a record 99 points and the league title thanks to a 4-0 win. A Luis Pietro own-goal, one from Pedro and a Messi brace were enough to get the all-important win which secured the second of the three consecutive leagues won with Guardiola as coach. In 2009/10 Barça also won the Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

Having gone back to 2009/10 we are going to take a look at a more recent memory from last season. Luis Enrique’s team beat Granada 3-0 on the last day at the Nuevo Estadio Los Cármenes thanks to a Luis Suárez hat-trick, which earned Barça a league title and the Uruguayan the Golden Boot.

Luis Enrique’s players went into the match with 88 points, one ahead of Real Madrid. The blaugranas travelled to Granada and los blancos were playing away to Deportivo against Riazor. Real Madrid won 2-0 but Barça were nerveless in Andalucia. The goals from Barça’s number ‘9’ Suárez with assists from Alba, Dani Alves and Neymar Jr secured a convincing victory and the Club’s 24th league title.

This time around, Luis Enrique’s squad come into the final match of the season against Eibar at 8.00pm CET on Saturday knowing that they need Real Madrid to lose against Málaga and them to beat Eibar to end the day as champions. The excitement and tension will go down to the wire as the two great rivals battle it out.
