Thomas Vermaelen during training in Washington / MIGUEL RUIZ - FCB

“Last season is out of my head and physically, now I feel good. Last year was a disappointment after playing just once due to injury, but now I have left that behind and I am only looking to the future.” These were some of the words from FC Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen following the team’s training session at the American University in Washington DC.

The Belgian confessed that “everyone, since last year, has helped me a lot” and that “last season I was not able to feel part of a great side.” “I hope to do it this year, that would be fantastic, said Vermaelen, well aware of how hard it will be to repeat the treble of last season: “We will try because the squad is pretty much the same and we have the quality to do it. But now we can’t think about it, it’s over, we just have to take the opportunity to do it again.

“I am happy to be able to play again”Vermaelen revealed that he feels “very happy to be fit enough to play, that was my main goal. In a club like Barça there are so many good players it is difficult to get in the starting 11. The defender admitted last season was the “worst” of his career: “I was very disappointed, I had come to a new club and then I couldn’t play because of injury. It was a tough year.”
