The challenges overcome by Messi

By scoring against Petr Cech at Arsenal’s ground on Tuesday, the Argentine star conquered two personal battles in one night

It seems as though whenever Leo Messi gets on the scoresheet, he breaks another record or reaches a new landmark.

Against Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday it was no exception, but unlike last week against Celta Vigo where he scored his 300th league goal, this time it was personal.

Scoring against Cech and at Arsenal

In his six previous matches against goalkeeper Petr Cech, Messi simply could not get the better of the Czech stopper, nor had he ever scored at Arsenal’s ground.

That would all change, however, as two quickfire strikes towards the end of the match ensured both achievements were unlocked. Here is a list of other landmark goals for Messi:

Scoring in London in a knockout match

Despite scoring at Wembley in the 2011 Champions League final against Manchester United, Messi could not find the net in the English capital in a knockout affair.

In six previous attempts - four against Chelsea and two against Arsenal – the Argentine had not scored in London, that was until his goal in the 73rd minute on 23 February 2016.

Highest scorer in the Champions League

The Catalans are now the highest ever scorers in Europe’s elite competition with 82 goals against 25 different teams.

Goal 10,000

Due to the amount he gets each year, perhaps it is not so surprising that Messi was the scorer of the club’s 10,000th goal. In fact, he was also the scorer of Barça’s 9,000th too.
