Barça are the current holders of the Champions League title and this season they have lived up to that billing by winning four and drawing one of their five matches so far in Group E of this season’s Champions League, 13 points enough to see them through already to the last 16 as group winners. The Catalans are undefeated in the competition so far and that is motivation enough for Wednesday’s clash with Bayer Leverkusen: “We want to win as always. They want to remain in the Champions League and we want to win as many games as we can to show we are the best in the group,” said Marc-André ter Stegen.

The Barça goalkeeper continued in his appearance before the press in his native Germany ahead of the clash with Bundesliga side: "I hope to win tomorrow. We feel good, we are leaders in the group and we will show that on the field.

“I am not thinking about the World Club Cup. The game on the horizon is this Wednesday and we want to play well and win. We went to respond as we should as favourites. We are leaders because of the points we have picked up.

“It’s always dangerous playing against Bayer Leverkusen. They pressure well and they will try to play as always, with the ball. We think we have a chance of scoring goals against them.”

The man signed from Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2014 showed himself to be content to be back on home soil: “I am happy to be close to home, just an hour away. My family are coming to see me and it is a special game for me and I want to win.

“I know the fans from playing in Germany and I hope we get a good welcome. It is always interesting to discover a new set of fans like I am at the moment in Barcelona. We have been to Rome and there they have a different type of fans as well.”

Finally Ter Stegen dispelled any doubts about his own form. “I think it is all going well. In the Champions League we have played two games without conceding, against Roma they scored a great goal against us. I just want to play as well as I can and it is the coach who decides who plays,” concluded the German.
