Leo Messi has gone on to score a total of 77 Champions League goals

It was on 2 November 2005 that Leo Messi scored his first goal in the Champions League. It came in the 34th minute of a group stage match against Panathinaikos at the Camp Nou. And it was no ordinary goal. With Barça already leading 2-0 on a game that ended with the Catalans scoring five, the 18-year-old Argentinian gave us a glimpse of the magic to come by flicking the ball over goalkeeper Galinovic.

77 goals in 100 appearances

Barça would go on to win the title in Paris that season, while Leo Messi was destined to become the greatest player the game has ever seen. He’s scored 77 times in Europe’s premier club competition, winning the trophy four times (2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015). He’s the second top scorer in the history of the Champions League, just behind Cristiano Ronaldo, and has topped the season rankings in no fewer than five different editions (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015).

The team on the receiving end of the most Messi goals has been AC Milan, who’ve conceded a massive eight to his talents. His highest scoring matches came against Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen. He got four against the Premiership side in 2010, and went one better with five on an extraordinary evening against the Bundesliga team in 2012. And Messi also gets goals when they really matter, like the one against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu in the 2011 semi-final and goals in the 2009 and 2011 finals, both against Manchester United.
