Spain on the verge of qualification for Euro 2016 after 1-0 win in FYR Macedonia

Barça's Gerard Piqué and Sergio Busquets start in a game decided by Juan Mata's early strike

A Spanish national side containing blaugranes Piqué, Sergio Busquets, Bartra, Iniesta and Jordi Alba have taken a big step towards qualification for the tournament in France next summer thanks to a 1-0 win in Skopje against group C bottom side FYR Macedonia. With 21 points and just two games to go in the group, Spain are now in top spot on 21 points with a two point lead over Slovakia who drew with third place Ukraine on Tuesday evening also.

An early goal from Juan Mata after only seven minutes gave Vicente del Bosque’s team a dream start. Barça players Gerard Piqué and Sergio Busquets were amongst the starting 11 for the away game in which the visitors had problems creating chances despite their early strike.

Nevertheless, Macedonia themselves found it difficult to break down the defence of ‘La Roja’, and when they did succeed, the home side’s finishing let them down badly. Andrés Iniesta appeared late in the second half as a substitute and helped guide his side to a win that takes them to the brink of qualification for Euro 2016.
