Seventh league and cup double in FC Barcelona history

This is the second time that the club has managed to win both major domestic honours in back-to-back seasons. It last happened way back in the 1950s

FC Barcelona’s magnificent decade continues with a Copa del Rey victory against Sevilla, thus completing yet another double! With the European Super Cup and Club World Cup as well, 2015/16 has been yet another season to remember..

This was the seventh time Barça have won the league and club in a single season, and Luis Enrique has led the team to the back-to-back doubles for the first time since in more than fifty years – it last happened in 1951/52 and 1952/53.

The fabulous fifties

The first of those was the year of the famous Five Cups won under Ferdinand Daucik and starring Kubala. Barça topped the Liga table and then saw off Valencia 4-2 in the cup final, and the did the trick again a year later, this time beating Athletic Bilbao 2-1 to win the cup.

There would be another double to come before the decade was out. With Helenio Herrera as manager, the Catalans finished four points ahead of Real Madrid in the league and beat Granada 4-1 to bring home the cup.

Golden years

Fans would have to wait another forty years before they witnessed another double winning season. Louis Van Gaal was the man in charge as Barça finished nine points ahead of Athletic Bilbao to win the league at a canter, and then saw off Mallorca on penalties to win the Copa del Rey – with current manager Luis Enrique among the players.

Double number five came in 2008/09 Pep Guardiola’s first season. It was actually a treble as the team won the Champions League as well, a feat matched by Luis Enrique last year with a 3-1 cup final defeat of Athletic Bilbao and a win by the same score to beat Juventus in the Champions League.
