Rival Watch: Win for Roma ahead of FC Barcelona clash

Rudi Garcia's side beat Frosinone thanks to goals from Iago Falqué and Iturbe Bayer Leverkusen suffer their second defeat in the Bundesliga and BATE can only manage a draw in Belarus

AS Roma can now turn their thoughts to the Champions League. The Italians face FC Barcelona on Wednesday in the blaugranes’ first encounter of the group stages in this season’s competition. On Saturday Rudi Garcia’s recorded a 2-0 win over Frosinone in Serie A thanks to goals from former blaugrana Iago Falqué and Juan Manuel Iturbe. Roma now have seven points from their opening three matches in the league and are currently joint top of Serie A with the weekend’s fixtures still to be completed.

Roma were not the only of Barça’s Champions League rivals in action this weekend:

Second league defeat for Leverkusen

Robert Schmidt’s side suffered their second defeat in the Bundesliga, going down to a 1-0 reverse at home against newly promoted Darmstadt. Sulu scored the only goal of the game early in the first half after just eight minutes and Leverkusen were unable to turn things around in the eighty or so minutes that were left. Bayer have now lost twice and won twice so far in four matches in the Bundesliga 2015/16 season.

BATE Borisov can only manage a point

Belarus league leaders BATE Borisov could only pick a point at home to third place Shakhtyor Soligorsk. Kamarovski put the visitors ahead after 18 minutes but in the second half BATE’s Stasevic leveled things up. Barça’s group stage rivals remain eight points clear of Dinamo Minsk in the league table.
