Rival watch: Atlético Madrid go second

Three points for Diego Simeone’s side at Real Betis puts them ahead of Real Madrid while FC Barcelona’s next league opponents Real Sociedad defeat Sevilla

Atlético Madrid beat Real Betis 1-0 on Sunday which, coupled with FC Barcelona’s win over Real Madrid on Saturday, sees Diego Simeone’s side leapfrog their city rivals into second place.

Los Colchoneros started the week in third position, two points behind Madrid but an early goal from Koke at the Estadio Benito Villamarín was enough to take the win which now puts them within four points of leaders Barça at the end of Week 12. Atlético have entered a good recent run of form, with four wins from five games.

Barça’s next league opponents Real Sociedad got off to a perfect start under new manager Eusebio Sacristán. The Basque side had won just two games in their opening eleven but pulled off an impressive 2-0 win over Sevilla at Anoeta thanks to second half goals from Agirretxe and Xabi Prieto which moves them up to 14th in the table. Real Sociedad will be looking to take their positive start under their new boss into their visit to Camp Nou on Saturday.

Villanovense’s slump continues

After Real Sociedad, Barça’s next opponents are Villanovense who will come to town for the second leg of the Copa del Rey. The Segunda B side’s woes continued over the weekend as they slumped to their fourth straight league defeat away to Recreativo Huelva (2-1).
