Messi chips Neuer to score the best goal in the competition / MIGUEL RUIZ-FCB

Leo Messi’s brilliant second goal against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final was just one of many occasions when the Argentinian has stunned the world. An online vote by users of the official UEFA website has named the work of art, in which he leaves Boateng on the floor before cheekily chipping Bayern keeper Neuer, the best of the 20014/15 edition of the tournament.

Messi’s goal beat nine other candidates, including one against PSG scored by his Barça colleague Neymar Jr. And there was a double reason to celebrate, because Marc-André ter Stegen is also to be honoured for the best save of the 2014/15 Champions League.

Leo Messi finished as one of the three joint top goalscorers in last season’s Champions League, tied on ten goals with Neymar Jr and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. And he’s also been shortlisted for the UEFA Best Player in Europe award, a title he already won in 2011. This year’s winner will be announced before the Champions League draw in Monaco on Thursday.
