Luis Enrique speaking the press after the Friday training session / MIGUEL RUIZ-FCB

First team manager Luis Enrique faced the media on Friday after training to discuss various matters, but most especially the stunning 8-0 defeat of Deportivo and Saturday’s 8.30pm CET kick-off against his hometown club, Sporting Gijón. Here’s a round-up of quotes from the press conference:

Following on from the 8-0 win

“We need to win all four remaining games. They’re vital. The win at Riazor was perfect for us. It has boosted us but we now have to confirm that in the games we have left. They’ll be interesting matches, both for the top and the bottom of the table. But we are on great track.”

Sporting Gijón

“I think they’re having a unique season. They can still survive and you must remember that they were unable to strengthen their squad in the summer. They have achieved what they have on the basis of hard work, with order in attack and defence. I hold Sporting dear in my heart and the club reflects what the city means.”

Quini honoured

“I think it’s fantastic that Quini is going to get a special award from the club. Quini was like a God to the people of Gijón. I have had the fortune to share footballing moments with him and that was a dream come true for me. I am sure that being recognised by Barça will put a big smile on his face. We’ll have the chance to hug each other and that’s always good news.”

The squad

“I am very happy with the whole squad, I have no complaints. And we have the perfect fans who always get behind us.”

“Messi was unfortunate with the knocks he took at Riazor but he has trained fine this Friday and is perfectly fit”.

“I make changes when I see that they can help the team to improve. When I don’t, the players on the pitch, stay on the pitch”.

“We were infinitely superior against Valencia. I thought the team did well. Of course we have let a big lead slip but we are still set to win all four remaining matches”.

“To attack, we need the help of the whole team, including the goalkeeper and the defenders. The merit for everything good and for everything bad comes down to the whole team. But what Luis Suárez did, scoring four goals and giving three assists, there aren’t many players who can do that kind of thing.”

Neymar Jr

“The decision for him to miss the Copa America and play at the Olympics was one agreed by the different parties. We sought the best for the player, who is desperate to play for his country. The agreement seems right to me. It’s best for the player, for the club, and for Brazil”.

New Camp Nou

“It’s the right idea, I loved it. It’s a shame we have to wait so long until it’s ready but I’m sure that the end result will be spectacular”.
