Luis Enrique will be facing an old friend on Wednesday night at El Molinón. He and Sporting boss ‘Pitu’ Abelardo grew up through the ranks at the Asturian club and both moved on to Barça later in their careers.

Luis Enrique spent one season (1990-91) in the Sporting first team, scoring fourteen goals that helped qualify the red-and-whites for the UEFA Cup, including one goal at the Camp Nou.

Six years later, in 1996, and ‘Lucho’ signed for FC Barcelona, for whom his many goals included these against his former club, both at the Camp Nou and El Molinón.

Abelardo was a set piece specialist, and at Barça he will always be remembered for scoring goals from headers. And he was able to share many of them with his lifelong pal Luis Enrique, for the duo were together at Barça for a long spell between 1996 and 2002.
