Leo Messi signs a Barça shirt for Quini. / FCB

When FC Barcelona landed in Asturias on Wednesday morning ahead of their already emotionally charged encounter with Sporting de Gijón, there was another subplot added to the narrative — a sentimental encounter between Lionel Messi and Quini, the former Barça player and current Sporting ambassador who was infamously kidnapped at gunpoint on 1 March 1981 after scoring a brace in a 6–0 Barça league victory.

They are two players who have left indelible marks on FC Barcelona history, albeit for two very different reasons, and will always share at least one big link.

With Quini waiting for Barça’s arrival at the Asturias Airport, Messi signed two shirts for him, one from Barça and the other from Argentina. Then, in a moment of tenderness, the two men embraced.

It was an unforgettable snapshot, even if it wasn’t the first time they had met. Messi and Quini were photographed together in the 2008/09 season along with Guillermo Amor. On that occasion, the players who scored Barça’s 3000th (Quini), 4000th (Amor) and 5000th (Messi) league goals were brought together for posterity.
