Leo Messi and Luis Suárez lead European goalscoring in 2016

The two FC Barcelona strikers have scored 14 goals each since New Year, more than any other player in Europe’s five biggest leagues

FC Barcelona could not have ended 2015 in better fashion, with victory in the Club World Cup. But 2016 hasn’t exactly got off to a bad start either! The team has not lost any of the 14 games played (eight in La Liga and six in the Copa del Rey) since the New Year began, part of their record-breaking 31 match unbeaten streak.

They’ve scored 44 goals in those games, an average of 3.1 every 90 minutes. And more than half of those have been scored by just two men: Messi and Luis Suárez. The Argentinian and the Uruguayan have 14 goals each, putting them ahead of anyone else in Europe’s major leagues in 2016.

Neymar Jr, the other member of the famous trident, has added a further six goals to help the team on its way to the Copa del Rey final and to a six-point lead at the top of the Liga table.

This table shows the top scorers in 2016 from top flights in England, Germany, Italy, France and Spain.
