Javier Mascherano during press conference / MIGUEL RUIZ - FCB

Shortly before manager Luis Enrique, Javier Mascherano spoke to the media in Madrid ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Atlético.

Plenty of questions were put to the Argentine centre-back, about the opposition’s style of play, Messi and the recent league defeats among others. Here is what Mascherano said:

Recent slip-ups

“We are not making excuses, nor are we looking back, everything is in our hands. None of us have any doubts, because we just have to be ourselves.”

Another final

“We are aiming to fix the small details which determine whether you win or lose. Tomorrow is the first day of all of the finals that remain until the end of the season.”

Atlético’s approach

“Atlético Madrid has a clear idea of how they want to play and everything they have won they have earned.”

The 2-1 lead

“It relaxes us and gives us the confidence to go out there and do a good job.”

"Talking about Messi makes me uncomfortable. He has demonstrated many times what type of player he is"
