International Champions Cup starts with win for LA Galaxy

The pre-season tournament that will feature FC Barcelona began on Saturday with a victory for the blaugranes' first opponents in the competition

The International Champions Cup is now under way with LA Galaxy, FC Barcelona’s first opponents in the pre-season challenge, recording a 2-1 win over Mexican side Club América in the StubHub Center Stadium on Saturday. Quintero put América ahead after just eight minutes but a goal from Irishman Robbie Keane on the stroke of half-levelled the scores for the Californians. In the second half Alan Gordon grabbed the winner with just ten minutes remaining to give the Galaxy an excellent opening victory in the tournament. Big summer signing and former team mate of Luis Suárez at Liverpool Steven Gerrard made his debut for the American club, playing 45 minutes before being replaced at the break.

The side from Los Angeles will be Barça’s first opponents in the International Champions Cup on July 21 (at 5.00am CET on July 22 in Barcelona) at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Two further fixtures will come in the USA for the blaugranes with Luis Enrique’s side taking on Manchester United on July 25 in San Francisco (at 10.00pm CET) and then Chelsea on July 29 in Washington DC (at 2.00am CET on July 30). The blaugranes’ first appearance in the tournament will end back in Europe against Fiorentina on August 2 in Florence, Italy (at 9.00pm CET).
