Goals plentiful in Clásicos over last five years

This Saturday in the Santiago Bernabéu at 6.15pm CET there is the small matter of the Clásico between a Barça side who lead the league by three points over nearest rivals Real Madrid. Luis Enrique’s team come into the game with nine wins and two defeats in the league, whilst the side coached by Rafa Benítez have won seven, drawn three and lost one. Recent clashes between the two rivals have seen plenty of goals in the fixture and this season the two sides are topscorers in the First Division with Real Madrid having scored 26 and Barça one less on 25. The Clásico is synonymous with rivalry, spectacle and also emotion and goals as matches in the last few seasons bear out.

An average of 3.4 goals per game

Since the season 2009/10 up until present day a total of 78 goals have been scored in the 23 Clásicos that have been played in that time, an average of 3.4 goals per game. Of those matches, 11 have come in the league, two in the Champions League , six in the Copa del Rey and four in the Spanish Super Cup. Barça’s record in that time is 10 wins, six draws and seven defeats.

Of those 10 balugrana victories, the highlights have been the 5-0 win at Camp Nou, the 2-0 win at the Bernabéu in the Champions League semi-final in 2011 and the 3-1 win the league in Madrid the following season. More recently, two seasons ago the blaugranes ran out 4-3 winners away from home, helped by a spectacular hat-trick from Leo Messi. The Argentine is the top scorer of all time in the Clásico with 21 goals against Real Madrid.
