Sergio Busquets talks to children at the inauguration of the 'Cruyff Court' in Badia del Vallès / GERMÁN PARGA - FCB

He calls Badia del Vallès home and takes every opportunity to help it grow. The last major event there was the inauguration of a 'Cruyff Court' bearing his name.

Sergio Busquets Burgos, the boy from Badia, is the best sponsor this new social project could have. Launched by the Cruyff Foundation, La Caixa, and the FC Barcelona Foundation, it aims to promote sport and its values among local children.

"I feel a lot of affection in Badia, but it’s mutual because I've always been proud of being from here," he says.

Maybe that's why Sergio did not hesitate, not even for a split second, to accept the agreement proposed by Johan Cruyff.

"It is an honour, because we know what Johan was, both to sport and to society,” Busquets said. “He told me about the project and we quickly reached an agreement, because it was a unique opportunity for both Badia del Vallès and for its children."

Barça TV and the Club’s official website took advantage of the grand opening of the Cruyff Court Sergio Busquets to sit down with the Catalan midfielder and talk about his personal feelings on the issue.I know where I am and what I represent, and that’s why I have to give it my best.

Not so long ago, the now 27-year-old Busquets was a little boy here, something that gives extra meaning to the initiative.

"Sport makes you who you are as a person," he said. “In my case, I was lucky enough to be able to spend my childhood attached to a ball. It’s something that has been very useful and very important for me, because I learned values I could use in my social life."

“I know where I am and what I represent, and that’s why I have to give it my best,” he emphasised.

Wanting the best for Barça

In addition to discussing the initiative, Busquets also took a look back at the season that recently ended, one in which Barça won the domestic double of La Liga and the Copa del Rey

"It was a very good season,” he said. “Even though we couldn’t bring in any new players until midway through the season, the team had a very good run. It is true that we hit a small rough patch that cost us the Champions League, but after that the team came back to win two titles in what ended up being a great season, both in sports-related and personal terms."

Busquets also became a father this year following the birth of his son, Enzo. “I lived a quiet life," he said. "Everything is different now."

Nevertheless, he acknowledged it was “the best thing ever happened to me in my life and now that’s my priority."

"I hope everything keeps going well," he said.

While the future always brings at least some degree of uncertainty, one thing that is clear is that Busquets will renew his contract with Barça until the end of the 2022/23 season, depending on the number of appearances he makes.

"I do not know what it will be like when I am 33 years old, but hopefully I’ll be a better player, that I am more complete, and that I am in good shape physically,” he said. “I want to be a key player and, when I can’t perform any longer, I will be happy to step aside. I always want what’s best for the Club."
