FC Barcelona and Sevilla to face off in both Copa del Rey final and Spanish Super Cup

As well as playing each other for the domestic cup trophy this Sunday, the two sides will square off in August for the first title of the new campaign

FC Barcelona and Sevilla are set to do battle for the Copa del Rey this Sunday, and regardless of who wins in the final, the two will also meet in the summer’s Spanish Super Cup.

The two-legged tie which will take place in August at the Sánchez Pizjuán and Camp Nou will be Barça’s first official games of the 2016/17 season.

The reason why the pair will go head-to-head in the Super Cup is down to the fact that Barça have won La Liga; rather than the second spot of the Super Cup going to the league runner-up, it instead goes to the winner of the cup, and if it is the same team then the runner-up in the cup.

Meetings between Barça and Sevilla rarely disappoint in terms of entertainment. Last year’s European Super Cup ended in a thrilling nine-goal game which the Catalans won in extra-time thanks to a strike from Pedro Rodriguez.

The last time the two met in a Spanish Super Cup did not lack goals either, as the two-legged tie ended 5-3 in Barça’s favour.

Athletic, Real Madrid and Mallorca

This will not be the first time in recent history that Barça’s Super Cup opponent will be the same as their Copa del Rey rival. It happened just last season when, after beating Athletic Club 3-1 in the cup final at Camp Nou, the pair squared off in the first trophy of the new season, which the Basques won 5-1 on aggregate.

In 2010/11, Barça and Real Madrid met in the cup final, which Los Blancos won by a solitary goal before the Catalans exacted revenge in the Super Cup (5-4).

The same happened in 1998, when Barça beat Mallorca in the final of the cup on penalties, before meeting in the Super Cup, where they lost 3-1 over the two matches.
