Arda Turan with his new shirt in the Camp Nou pressroom / VÍCTOR SALGADO-FCB

Arda Turan has sat in the FC Barcelona pressroom for the first time, where he has made it more than clear that he is absolutely thrilled to be here. “People who have known me since I was a kid know that I have always wanted to form part of this team” he said on Friday morning, already proudly dressed in a polo shirt with the Barça crest on it. “I’ll be playing to a new system here. But I think I’ll be able to adapt. It’s won’t be easy but I’m hoping that the transition will go well.”

The Ricard Maxenchs pressroom was packed for the event, with a huge contingent of Turkish reporters covering a story that is swamping the sports pages in their country at the moment. Arda Turan admitted that he had received a large number of offers from different clubs, but “those were all thrown aside as soon as learned of Barça’s interest. I wanted to sign as quick as possible because this is a dream come true for me.” And that is precisely what he did first thing on arrival at the club this morning, putting pen to paper on a contract for the next five seasons.

Contact with Iniesta and Luis Enrique

Next Monday 13 July, Barça’s latest signing will be able to meet his new team-mates, for whom he already has a huge sense of admiration. Naturally, he had nothing but praise for Messi and also spoke about how grateful he was to receive a welcome message from Andrés Iniesta. “I feel great here, really happy” he said. “Everyone has welcomed me with smiles on their faces, and I hope to win plenty more titles for them”.

Luis Enrique also made a point of making first contact with the midfielder. “He wanted me to come here and I’m very happy because of that” said Arda. “I’ll do all I can to win a place in the team and participate as much as I can”.

The former Galatasaray and Atlético Madrid star will not be able to play for Barça until 2016 because of the suspension imposed on the club. Asked about the matter, the Turk replied that “I hope these six months fly by and that I can start helping Barça as soon as possible.” He was also asked if there had been any mention of him spending the period on loan. “There have been no thoughts on that matter” he replied. “I just plan to make use of the time by adapting to things here”.

He still has no idea what shirt number he’ll be wearing at his new club. “That’s not a big issue to me and I’ll talk it over with the rest of the squad” he commented. He was also quizzed on how it feels to have come to the Camp Nou as a potential substitute for Xavi, an idea he refused to entertain. “Nobody could possibly replace Xavi” he insisted. “He was somebody unrepeatable and an icon of Barcelona and world football.”
