Messi, Neymar and Suárez goals helped win a 23rd league championship / FCB

FC Barcelona are the new league champions. After a great season in which they have amassed 93 points, Sunday’s win against Atlético Madrid at the Calderón ensured a 23rd championship title. Here we pick out ten key moments of the campaign:

1- Luis Enrique, winning start

“I think it’s a nice night for everyone, especially the debutants at the Camp Nou” said the Barça manager after winning 3-0 over Elche in the first game of the season, with two goals from Messi and another from Munir, in his first ever start for the first team. For the third year in a row, Barça started the league as leaders.

2- 754 minutes without beating Bravo

The Chilean goalkeeper could not have wished for a better start to his Barça career. In seven wins and one draw, he lasted 754 minutes without conceding a goal, thus beating the record set by Pedro Maria Artola in 1977/78 of going 560 minutes into a league season without being beaten. With one game left to play, Bravo has only conceded 19 goals in 37 matches, an average of 0.51 a game.

3- Messi makes more history

The Argentinian became the highest goalscorer in Liga history when he beat Zarra’s sixty year old record of 251 goals. And he broke it in style by scoring a hat-trick past Sevilla at the Camp Nou in the twelfth game of the season, taking his career tally up to an incredible 253 goals.

4- Luis Suárez scores first goal

The Uruguayan scored his first goal for his new club on December 20 at home to Córdoba. Luis Suárez, has gone to develop a perfect understanding with Neymar and Leo Messi, and has converted 16 goals in the league, and also made 9 assists in 2,231 minutes spread over 27 league matches.

5- Anoeta, last away defeat

On January 4, FC Barcelona were defeated 1-0 at Real Sociedad, meaning they squandered an opportunity to pass Real Madrid in the league table after the latter had slipped up against Valencia. But since then, the Catalans have collected, 9 wins and one draw on the road, including the one at the Calderón on Sunday. In total, they have a record of 18 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat since that day in San Sebastian.

6- The trident powers on

One of the greatest elements of the team this year has been the attacking threesome of Messi, Suárez and Neymar. The first time all of them scored in the same league game was in the 3-1 win at home to Atlético Madrid al Camp Nou in game 18. But the complete trio also found the target in the 5-1 win at Athletic Bilbao, the 5-0 and 6-0 defeats of Córdoba and Getafe and against Córdoba once again in the 8-0 win at the Nuevo Arcángel. Neymar has scored 22 goals in the league, while Messi has 41 and Suárez 16. That’s 79 of the overall tally of 108 that the side has scored.

7- Barça go top

FC Barcelona took two games to cut down Real Madrid’s four point lead and go one point ahead at the top of the table. The leaders were held 1-1 by Villarreal in week 25 while Barça won 3-1 at Granada. A week later, the all-times were downed 1-0 at San Mamés while Barça thumped Rayo 6-1 to take top spot, where they have remained ever since.

8- Madrid lose at the Camp Nou

That lead was extended to four points when the two leading clubs met at the Camp Nou. The clásico ended in a 2-1 defeat of Real Madrid thanks to goals from Mathieu and Suárez.

9- Xavi makes history

It was also a momentous season for Xavi Hernández, who played his 500th league fixture, all in a Barça shirt (he’d also recently passed the 750 mark in official appearances in all competitions). He played game 500 in a 2-0 win over local rivals Espanyol at the Power8 Stadium. He has since gone on to extend his total to 504 Liga outings.

10- Champions at the Calderón

One year after Atlético Madrid won the league title at the Camp Nou, FC Barcelona did likewise with a 1-0 win at the Calderón. That left them four points clear of Real Madrid with 93 points and one game still to play. That is at home to Deportivo, which the Catalans will go into with a record so far of 30 wins, 3 draws and 4 defeats, scoring 108 goals and conceding just 19.
