Last night everyone was talking about Messi’s record breaking goals at the Camp Nou, but it was also a special night for Ivan Rakitic at the Camp Nou, who was facing his former club, Sevilla. Following the 5-1 win, the Croatian appeared on El Marcador on Barça TV, where he said that “we needed a good game like this to get our morale back and also win the fans’ confidence. We needed to make sure they’re on our side.”

He added that “I didn’t celebrate the goal out of respect because I have Sevilla in my heart … It was a very special moment for me. I’m very pleased with the game. I think it was very important that we played as well as we did.”Naturally, Leo Messi’s name came up too. “He has not only achieved this record because of what he does on the pitch, but because of what he does in the dressing room too” said Rakitic. “He is such a relaxed guy. He likes to score goals and to be different. He won this because of his qualities as a player and as a team-mate. He’s an incredible lad.”

Messi was tossed in the air by his team-mates after he beat Zarra’s record, but Rakitic insists that it wasn’t something that had been planned beforehand. “It was a way of expressing what he means to the squad” he explained. “Messi was surprised too. He didn’t know what we were doing.”
