FC Barcelona 4-0 Bayern Munich

FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich have met in three previous ties in European competition with the Bavarians having got the better of the blaugranes on two occasions as well as in the group stage back in 1998/99. Barça’s overall record is one win, two draws and five defeats. In the three ties over two legs that the teams have played, one came in the UEFA Cup in 1995/96 and in the Champions League in 2008/09 and 2012/13, the team that has made it through has gone on to win the competition. Now, the two teams will meet again with Luis Enrique and Pep Guardiola in charge, two men who were involved in the previous ties in 1998/99 and 2008/09 respectively.

Season 1995/96

The first time that the two teams came face to face was in the UEFA Cup semi-finals. Barça drew 2-2 in Munich but then went down 2-1 at Camp Nou to a Bayern side who went on to beat Girondins Bordeaux in the final. In the first leg Òscar Garcia and Hagi scored in the away leg with Ivan De la Peña’s goal in the return not enough to send Barça through to the final.

Season 1998/99

Three seasons later, both sides met again in the Champions League initial phase in a group that also included Manchester United and Brondby. A goal from Steffen Effenberg gave the Germans the win in Munich with Luis Enrique playing 78 minutes. A young Xavi Hernández was also in the side and played almost the entire game. In the game at Camp Nou, Xavi played 90 minutes in a 2-1 defeat. Giovanni gave Barça the lead from the penalty spot before Alexander Zickler and Hasan Salihamidzic gave Bayern a comeback victory.
