Jérémy Mathieu gave his first interview as an FC Barcelona player after he was officially presented on Thursday. Barça TV and fcbarcelona.com picked up the defender’s first statements as a Culé: “I will give 100% of myself and I hope everything goes well on the pitch.” The Frenchman is aware that joining FC Barcelona is a step forward in his career, and he accepts that challenge: “It’s difficult to join a team after someone like Carles Puyol leaves, but I will show Barça that they made a good choice in signing me.”

During the interview, Mathieu explained that he started playing football at the age of five for his hometown team, and seven years later he joined the youth ranks of Sochaux. At 17 he made his debut for the first team. Fast forward 13 years, and he now finds himself playing for FC Barcelona: “Being 30 gives you more tranquility and experience when you talk to the press and deal with the atmosphere of big clubs. I’m very ready for the demands and pressure.”
I won’t have any problems when it comes to finding my place in the team. But for now, I have to do all my talking on the pitch
Barça’s new number 24 started training with his new teammates on Friday, and he’s confident that he’ll adapt quickly to the team: “I won’t have any problems when it comes to finding my place in the team. But for now, I have to do all my talking on the pitch.” Coming to Barça has made it possible for Mathieu to reunite with his former Valencia teammate Jordi Alba: “I’m sure he’ll help me integrate.”
I came to Barça to win all of the titles that I’ve haven’t won yet
Mathieu added: “I came to Barça to win all of the titles that I’ve haven’t won yet.” He also had talked about his countryman Éric Abidal: “He’s a very important person to this Club, and he deserves all the love Barça gives him.”
