Luis Enrique excited about the Cup final / MIGUEL RUIZ - FCB

Luis Enrique appeared this Friday in his press conference ahead of Saturday’s Spanish Cup final which kicks off at 9.30pm CET. With Athletic Bilbao their opponents, Barça will be aiming for a 27th victory in the competition and the coach made it clear that both he and the squad were not lacking in motivation. “It’s one of the best games you could possibly play in, for the atmosphere, and because there is a trophy at stake,” commented the blaugrana coach.

“Athletic are one of the most difficult sides to play against, they try and take the ball off you and they put you under pressure at all times.” That is how Luis Enrique defined the Basque outfit who are also highly motivated for the encounter at Camp Nou. He went on to recognise that Athletic “come into the game in their best form.” Finally, the Asturian former Barça player confirmed that Luis Suárez is fine physically and that he expects a game similar to the one that was played in the league: “We need to be incisive and be aware of moments in the game when we can cause them problems.”

During his appearance before the press Luis Enrique avoided talk of the upcoming Champions League final which will be played on 6 June in Berlin. “At no point in the season have we made the mistake of getting ahead of ourselves, and we will not start now,” he claimed.

Below we highlight some more of Luis Enrique’s comments from Friday’s press conference:

“I am not going to use any motivational video because the players are already completely motivated. There is plenty of impetus for them to win.”

“After lots of matches in the competition and a faultless run, now the best is to come. We are highly motivated and we don’t value any trophy over another.”

“I won’t play 11 footballers, I will play with the 23 players from the squad who have brought us here.”

The role of the fans

“Athletic are one of the best supported teams. The two sets of fans have an excellent relationship and they will do their best for both their teams.”

“Having faith in your team is a quality that all fans ought to have. But us professionals know how hard it is to have it all up for grabs in 90 minutes, and that keeps us alert.”

Camp Nou as the venue

“It will be strange to go to the away dressing room but the players are professionals and they are used to playing in different stadiums.”

“In the past we have seen teams beaten in the final of competitions at their own ground. It is our ground but the atmosphere will be different. It’s the perfect venue to play football.”
