Thuram during his talk to the FutbolNet partocipants

Just a few weeks after the Champions League Final involved two of his former clubs, FC Barcelona and Juventus, ex-French international Lilian Thuram has analysed the match, saying that “Barça were fair winners because they outplayed their opponent. They are a more balanced team than they were before.”

He was speaking during a discussion with youngsters enrolled on the FutbolNet programme in Barcelona. The core subject of his talk was racism and ways of detecting and understanding modern-day discrimination, although he also found time during the session to comment on the current Barça team.

“They defend better and their attack is less predictable” he observed, before singling out a few players that particularly stand out for him. Mascherano, he said, “is a player that any team is lucky to have in their squad because he’s got such a strong winning mentality … And Leo Messi is a player who plays for fun and gives off such a positive image for footballers. He’s a calm, humble person, a great example for children. You can tell that he’s not just a great player, but a great person as well.”

Thuram also spoke about the recent retirement of a club legend, Xavi, saying that “I hope he returns one day as a coach because he is one of those people who form part of the Barça style and philosophy, and he can make it grow even more.”
