Not long after noon on Friday, Jordi Masip gave his first press conference since becoming a first team player, discussing his situation as one of three potential candidates for the goalkeeper’s role. He also gave his feedback on Luis Enrique’s comment last Wednesday that if he had to pick a keeper for a league match tomorrow, then Masip would be his first choice. “We are all going to have to work hard to win a place in the team and help the side to win the titles it needs this season” said the 24 year old Catalan.

“I am very hopeful about getting games and helping the team” he continued. “We want to play nice football to please the fans. … Marc [Ter Stegen] wants to learn a lot, including Catalan and Spanish. And it’s very important to have a keeper who’s so good with his feet. He’s very complete, and young, so there’s still plenty of room for improvement. High demands are going to be made of all three goalkeepers, but such competition for places can only be good for the team.”

“Luis Enrique already knows me, but he doesn’t really know Ter Stegen or Bravo yet. I was heartened by his words, and they’ve motivated me to keep working as hard as I can … Luis Enrique has always had faith in young players. If he has to play someone very young then he will, and that’s added motivation for the reserve team players. We have to do all we can to make things harder for the people who’ve been here for longer”.

If he is indeed to get games, then Masip is well aware that “I’ll have to put 100% into every single training session. Rain or shine, you’ve got to fight hard … Luis Enrique doesn’t seem any different to when he was managing the Barça B team. The intensity, the character and the enthusiasm are just the same. He’s developed, so some things are different, but the idea is the same. And he likes to speak to his players, and that helps a lot”.

Masip also mentioned that Víctor Valdés has congratulated him for finally making it into the first team, describing his predecessor as “the best goalkeeper in Barça history and one of my heroes.” Finally, on new signing Luis Suárez, he said that “I hope he gets here as soon as possible because he’s going to bring us a lot of joy”.
