The early bird in Barça’s case is a Canary Islander - Pedro Rodríguez. The striker has developed a knack of scoring goals in the first game of the New Year, with six in the last five games immediately after the Christmas break. The run began in his second season in the first team, when he claimed the equaliser against Villarreal, just after ending 2009 with the unique record of scoring in all six major competitions in a calendar year. It was just the beginning of Pedro’s tremendous goalscoring record in a Barça shirt.

The year after, he got both goals in a 2-1 win against Levante to get the year off to a fine start at the Camp Nou. The streak was broken in 2012, but in January 2013 and 2014 he was back with three goals in Barça’s 4-0 wins against Espanyol and Elche, two in the derby and one against the side from Alicante. All eyes will be on Pedro against Real Sociedad this weekend to see if he can extend his excellent record with a goal to welcome in 2015.
